Blacks Solicitors Oversees Deal on New London Pub Venture for Celebrity Chef

July, 2018

Blacks Solicitors LLP, has overseen and helped complete the purchase of the lease on the Royal Oak pub in London, a new business venture for celebrity chef, Dan Doherty.

The Marylebone pub, which was purchased on 8 June 2018 by Urban Inns limited, is to be taken over by Dan Doherty, presenter on BBC1’s primetime programme ‘Britain’s Best Home Cook’, and business partner, Andy Ward.

Blacks was recommended to London-based Urban Inns through word of mouth. Its Commercial Property and Corporate teams worked closely with Urban Inns to facilitate the deal, which involved the transition and purchase of the existing lease and the transfer of the premises licence.

Claudia Willard, a Commercial Property Solicitor at Blacks, who led the team throughout the facilitation of the deal said: “It’s fantastic to have been referred to facilitate the deal for a London business, especially for such a renowned chef.

This deal was particularly significant with it involving the purchase of the existing lease, which meant it also required the expertise of the Corporate team here at Blacks. We thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at Urban Inns, and are happy to have completed this deal on what is going to be a very exciting business venture for them.”

Andy Ward, Director at Urban Inns said: “Dan and I were especially keen to get the right deal for the Royal Oak and ensure we didn’t fall foul of any pitfalls whilst getting the place open for business as soon as we could, so it was important that the transition and purchase of the lease was both efficient but as thorough as possible.

We were recommended Blacks Solicitors by a friend in the legal profession, and when we met the managing partner, Chris Allen, we were really impressed and knew we would be in good hands.

The whole team at Blacks were incredibly helpful, attentive and catered to our needs when it came to facilitating the deal. Not being based in London had no adverse effect on the service we received as everything could be done over phone or email.”

The Royal Oak is the first solo venture for Dan Doherty, previously the executive chef of London’s famous sky-high restaurant, the Duck and Waffle. Opening earlier this month, the pub features a newly designed food and drink offering and, post a refurbishment planned later in the year, an ‘informal yet refined’ dining room will be opened serving dishes from a seasonal menu, using high-quality produce sourced from the British Isles.
